One tiny clip. Hundreds of comments. And a perfectly normal Father’s Day recording that instantly turns into an internet post-mortem. We’re Hannah and Davey, and we start by clearing up the chaos around a viral-ish moment: Davey calling Elden Ring the hardest game he’s ever played. The replies range from genuinely helpful to hilariously intense, and we dig into what’s really happening when people argue through text with no tone, no body language and lots of certainty.
After that, we bring it back to the “present” theme of our Father’s Day special with a proper gift opening, featuring a map of Cursed Norfolk and a Black Shuck book that leans into local folklore, legends and the joy of collecting strange little stories. It’s a calmer, sweeter beat that shows how shared interests can cut through the noise.
Then we flip the whole episode into a game: Finish The Lyric. Hannah has spent hours trawling through Davey's band, Mammal Not Fish tracks, Davey’s early solo EP and more, and the results are brutal, funny and oddly revealing. We end up talking DIY recording gear, secret tracks, lyrics that would not fly today, band memories, and even the surreal moment a song charted in Japan.

Welcome And Father’s Day Present
SPEAKER_04Hello and welcome to Bonus Dad.
SPEAKER_02Bonus Daughter, a special father-daughter podcast with me, Hannah.
SPEAKER_04And me, Davy, where we discuss our differences, similarities, share a few laughs and stories. Within our ever-changing and complex world.
SPEAKER_02Each week we will discuss a topic from our own point of view. And influences throughout the decades. Or you could choose one by contacting us via email, Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok. Links in bio. Hello and welcome to a very special podcast episode. This is part two Father's Day. Part two Father's Day. We're taking it to the present, which means you get your present. Yeah. See what I did there.
SPEAKER_04Before, but actually you just looked at your phone, didn't you? And you said, oh look, someone's commented on one of our posts.
SPEAKER_02Should we just mention we we've gone viral in in terms of bonus dad, bonus daughter sense of viral. Yeah. Because it's not viral, viral, but it's um viral enough.
SPEAKER_04We're up to that tens of thousands of views.
SPEAKER_02Let's address it. Yeah.
Our Elden Ring Clip Sparks Debate
SPEAKER_02Yeah. This is a shorter episode, so we can address we can address the situation.
SPEAKER_04Yes. So I just want to clear something up. Okay. So Hannah did Hannah's done like Opus clips and uh they're very good. And so they went on. And I did I made a comment about Elden Ring, about how it was the hardest game. And let's let's just point the hardest game that I have ever played.
SPEAKER_02And can I say that Father here is not a hardcore gamer, he's a hobby gamer. Yes. So his definition of hard is his definition of hard. Exactly. Um, and some people very much disagreed with you on that.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, they did. So I but the thing is, but it was funny because then there were like hundreds of comments where people in comments they were arguing amongst each other as well, and it was hilarious. So I was just liking every comment. I thought it was brilliant. The more comments.
SPEAKER_02We started a bit of a ruckus.
SPEAKER_04Well, we did start a ruckus, and it was hilarious, and I was reading, reading through them. But the best bit was was that obviously when when when people write things in text, there is no body language, there is no tone or anything like that. So when somebody was saying something about it, saying it's not really that hard, they are you people imagine it saying in that type of voice. But they gen some of them genuinely weren't. They were lovely, a lot of the comments were lovely, a lot of the comments were, and then then some of the other comments went through, and then people arguing amongst each other, and it was really funny to watch, and I was just absolutely loving it. And then, but then I was like commenting on other points, and somebody actually wrote, Yeah, but you know, and like as I said, I don't the game doesn't actually tell you where to go or or what the quest. And some somebody wrote a comment saying the literally the light at the light at the grace tells you where to go. Main quest, mate, not the MPC quests. That's the one that I was they're the one that I was kind of referring to. Um, but yeah, but somebody actually put as a comment bro said the hardest game he's ever played. He's ever played, he's ever played. So I was like, man understanding. Yes, he's got it. But then he put the next two, he probably plays Minecraft.
SPEAKER_02Can I ask, have you ever played Minecraft? No, I find Minecraft really hard. That's the hardest game I've ever played.
SPEAKER_04But what the type of games that I do play are things like Red Dead Redemption 2, Cyberpunk, uh, The Witcher 3, um, sort of them open world games. I mean, we've played like The Last of Us and things like that. And Far Cry and all of that type of thing. And I don't put it on the easy difficulty, I keep it on like the normal difficulty. Um, for example, I finished Elden Ring, I did complete it, and uh 160 hours in, I have completed it, and FromSoft games are very hard, they're very good. I really, really enjoyed it. Will I be delving into other um FromSoft games? Probably yes.
SPEAKER_03Nice.
SPEAKER_04I will dip my toe into other FromSoft games, um, but I'm sure they will be just as hard. Even people arguing about the hardest FromSoft games obviously. Yeah, they were. But it sparked a great debate. It did. But the what I did like about it is that some of the comments weren't nasty.
SPEAKER_02No, I don't think so.
SPEAKER_04There wasn't any nasty, there was proper debates about gaming on there.
SPEAKER_02They were kind of funny, funny comments. Um, can I talk about my favourite comment?
The Funniest Comment Gets A Shout-out
SPEAKER_04Go on.
SPEAKER_02There was a gentleman, there was a gentleman who commented. Um, I hope he doesn't mind the shout-out. His I I looked into his profile, his name is Lorenzo, so thank you so much for commenting on our video. Um, and he put something about the woman seems really disinterested. Uh, and he couldn't be more correct. He was talking about Elden Ring, and I was like, damn, yeah, damn. Trying to sound uh enthusiastic about it, but it this guy saw right through me. And I and I and I frickin' love that. So I commented on that saying, it's not really my thing, mate. And he he said, uh, the well damn got him. So thank you, Lorenzo. Like thank you for also um But you were sarcastic.
SPEAKER_04You went, we all have our crosses to bear.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we we do, we all have our crosses to bear because like, yeah, I have to listen to this every single uh podcast episode. Um so so yeah, so thank you, Lorenzo. I really appreciate your comment and uh genuinely made me really, really laugh. So I just wanted you to know that if you do watch our episodes in there and what's there was one guy on there, and I thought it was
Push-ups Per Death And Boss Trauma
SPEAKER_02hilarious.
SPEAKER_04So he said that he got fit through playing Elden Ring. Okay, and what he did is every time he died, he had to do 20 push-ups.
SPEAKER_03He said he's like the fittest he's ever been, and I thought that was hilarious.
SPEAKER_04That's correct. And there was another guy who put uh like the one of the one of the bosses is called Melania, and she is she was insanely difficult. And every time she died, every time you died, she goes, I am Melania, queen of whatever. Um, and but you think you die so many times, you hear that constantly. And he he actually wrote, If I hear that one more time, I know, mate, I've got PTSD from myself.
SPEAKER_02It was brilliant. Thank you to everyone who uh interacted with that video and commented. We were we were laughing our heads off. Um and particularly Lorenzo, like, thank you so much, and thank you for being so kind as well. I really appreciate it. Um so yeah, thank you, thank you everyone. Um we uh we didn't expect I didn't expect that post to go when I when I picked it up. I was like, oh, it's got good ratings. Let's put that post on. And um I didn't realise it would blow up as much as it did. It really did.
SPEAKER_04I'd like to say the comments and the likes and the reposts and everything, it was it was brilliant. Yeah, thank you. It was just me talking about Elden Ring.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it was it was the most interaction we've probably got from any of our posts ever. Um and yeah, just wanted to thank everyone for that. That was that was awesome. Thank you so much for entertaining us because it was it was hilarious.
SPEAKER_04Proper crying, laughing, reading some of those comments. It was amazing.
SPEAKER_02So, so back to the
Opening Father’s Day Presents
SPEAKER_02Father's Day. Yes, Father's Day, so present. So this is present. We've just done the episode of past, this is present.
SPEAKER_04So oh, it's I've actually worked out what the theme is. So the next one will be future.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, funny that. I said that in the first episode, but it was it's fine, you can just ignore that. Would you like to open your presents?
SPEAKER_04Yes, with the um the with the rude Santa paper.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04I apologize for all of those on the audio podcast that can't see this. Um, but that looks this this is quite flappy.
SPEAKER_02It is quite flappy. Don't don't bend it.
SPEAKER_04All right. Oh, oh, okay. Oh, oh, I'm excited. Oh, I don't need any bending.
SPEAKER_02It's okay, it w it's it's quite hardy.
SPEAKER_04Is it? Yeah. Is it a poster of sorts? Oh my word. I don't think I've wrapped it that badly. No, no, it's not badly wrapped, it's very well wrapped. Oh, awesome. Show it to the screen. I'm just gonna get up and show it to the screen.
SPEAKER_02Get up and show it to the screen. Do you want to explain to everyone what it is? Yeah, it's it it's in it's in frame.
SPEAKER_04It's a it's a map of Cursed Norfolk. And we have the goat at Strumpshore Fen, Walsingham Market, Great Stone of Ling, No Man's Friend at Weyburn, Yarmouth Mummy, um Wick Wickham Brothers, the Roman Curse Case and Ed Case St. Edmunds, Tut and Carm at Swatham, Stock and Stone, Stockton Stone, Murton Stone, Cursed Sausages.
SPEAKER_02I don't know.
SPEAKER_04Cursed Sausages. Um what else have we got? North Walsingham Witch, Witch of East Summerton, and Cathedral Cursed Norwich. Very nice. Did you get this when you went to that shop in Bungie?
SPEAKER_02Maybe.
SPEAKER_04Maybe. That's cool. That's going up on the board.
SPEAKER_02I thought you might like that. I do. I like the style of it as well.
SPEAKER_04Thank you very much, daughter. Oh, this is a book.
SPEAKER_02What is it?
SPEAKER_04It's a book. It's a book. Oh, hello. Oh, a book on Black Shuck. Excellent. It's an easy or cut out your very own wise woman of Ursted.
SPEAKER_02I I did worry, suddenly thinking, oh, is this a children's thing? And then I looked inside it and I read it and I was like, oh no, it's not.
SPEAKER_04No, it's not now. Oh, that's awesome. Thank you.
SPEAKER_02You're welcome. There's a little like there's a little something from the people.
SPEAKER_04From the people?
SPEAKER_02That's what they sent. And there's a little box. Little sticker there. Oh, amazing.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, this will go up in my little room upstairs.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I thought you could display these as well. They were quite. I mean, that's just his his stuff that he does.
SPEAKER_04Um well I need to put that thing up on my wall. Which uh the padded thing up there. So the this could be attached.
SPEAKER_02Maybe it can attach it. But yeah, I just thought it was a little bit different. And it was podcasty because you do all the stuff.
SPEAKER_04That is really cool. Thank you, daughter.
SPEAKER_02You're welcome.
SPEAKER_04Thank you.
SPEAKER_02You're welcome. I hope you like it.
SPEAKER_04I do like it. Thank you very much, Sleepy.
SPEAKER_02So.
Setting Up Finish The Lyric
SPEAKER_04So.
SPEAKER_02So this episode is called Finish the Lyric.
SPEAKER_04Oh, okay. But Terracotta Pie, Terracotta Pie, Terra Terracot. Yep.
SPEAKER_02They're all Mammal Not Fish and Davy Whale songs.
SPEAKER_04Oh shit.
SPEAKER_02I wanted. Do you know what? Can I just say something before I start this episode properly and start with the questions?
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Is that not only did I go through Mammal Not Fish, I also went through your first EP.
SPEAKER_04Right. My solo EP.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And I also listened to your covers as well. So there might be one cover in here, and I just want to make sure that you are aware that I'm going to do that. But do you know what I discovered whilst I was doing this?
SPEAKER_04Go on.
SPEAKER_02One, your diction is terrible, so you might have to correct me on the actual lyrics.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_02Secondly, you are a cracking songwriter. There are some lyrics in here. I chose some really good ones, and I thought, cool, people are going to be well impressed with this because I was impressed. And I don't know if I'm impressed because you're my dad, or whether I'm impressed because you genuinely are a really good lyricist. So I just wanted to say that before the episode starts because I genuinely was impressed when I was doing this. Yeah. This took me three hours. Did it really? Because I was like going over the songs and I was like rewinding it, going through, turning up the volume. What did he say? And I was just like, oh, I think I think that's what it is. So some of these I will as as the as the quiz master, some of them might be wrong because I really, I really struggled on something, especially the first EP because the quality wasn't.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, well the quality remember that was recorded. That EP was recorded on a Lambda audio interface into a really old PC on an SM58. Actually, no, it was two SM58.
SPEAKER_02No, no, because yes respectfully it sounds dog shite now, but at the time it it sounded great.
SPEAKER_04Um an SM58, which is it which is a live microphone, it's not even a recording microphone, so it wasn't even so it didn't pick up half the stuff. The Lambda audio interface, Benji just absolutely pisses himself every time he sees this thing. It's like, what even is that?
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_04And then I plugged um and it was yeah, my tanglewood was plugged into the was into the back of the audio and it was. And it was your tangle wood, which is and it was done it through audacity as well.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. The quality is shocking, but I did my best. I did my best.
SPEAKER_04Um there's no timing in it at all because there's no metronome.
SPEAKER_02No, no. Um time is shite. The timing was a bit off, yeah. Um so I have 20 sets of lyrics.
SPEAKER_04I'm worried about that. I'm not sm I'm not so hard on the mammal stuff, but my early stuff. Yeah, I mean, I can't remember.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, okay.
SPEAKER_02Um good luck. Okay. Good luck.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
Forgetting Lyrics On Your Own Songs
SPEAKER_02So I'm gonna start off. I hope on an easy one.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_02I've got to try not to sing it. There's zombies in suits all around.
SPEAKER_04It's dreaming of the sea. Yep. Uh zombies in the sea. Um oh god. Uh yeah, it's definitely dreaming of the sea. Yeah. Uh second verse as well.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Next line. Um shit, I can't remember.
SPEAKER_02There's zombies in suits all around.
unknownOh.
SPEAKER_02Feeding off my soul while they're keeping me down. And I want to be free.
SPEAKER_04That's why I'm dreaming of the sea.
SPEAKER_02Terrible. Yeah. I thought you'd get that one straight away. That was a nice, easy one. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Well, the thing is, it's really it's like when you do, when you play the never mind the buzzcocks.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04It's really difficult. Yeah. Because the thing is These are your own songs. These are my own songs that you have written. I know. But the funny thing is, it's like, even like when we're on stage, I I've done it loads of times where like we're performing live and we've been doing the intro, and I look at Benji and go, can't remember the all I need is the first word.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And then I'm good to go. I was like, and Benji goes, you wrote this song. I know.
SPEAKER_02I I get Benji's frustration now. Benji, I'm so sorry. What a dickhead.
SPEAKER_04But I remember Grant doing it once as well.
SPEAKER_03What verse my end is my my biggest thing.
SPEAKER_04I remember Grant even in his songs. Like I remember him turning to the uh turning to like the rest of the band, and I'm thinking, this is a long intro, and I could literally see the panic on Grant's face, and he's done exactly the same because I can't remember my own song.
SPEAKER_02Okay, so ready for the next one?
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Face to face with the bride of Chucky.
SPEAKER_04Oh, that's wake up. Yeah. Oh god. It's a bride of Chucky. Um let's wake up. Sneak out.
SPEAKER_00No, just go.
SPEAKER_04Uh oh no, I can't.
SPEAKER_00Face to face with the bride of Chucky.
SPEAKER_04Um long hair to Wookiee.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Face with the bride of Chucky.
SPEAKER_04It's not face-to-face, by the way.
SPEAKER_02Oh, is it not?
SPEAKER_04No. What is it? I can't remember.
SPEAKER_02But it's not face to face. She's got more hair than that. Than a six foot. I'll give you that one.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that's um, yeah, that's that song. I as you said at our last gig, that song, if we release that now, that would probably get us cancelled.
SPEAKER_02Oh.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, because it's uh Yeah, it is a bit, it's a bit.
SPEAKER_02I actually, when I was listening to your other songs, I was like, that wouldn't fly today. No, exactly. Don't worry, I chose lyrics that weren't that bad.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, wake up is uh it's it's basically what happens when you wake up in the morning after a one night stand, and it's like the it was inspired by Coyote Ugly.
SPEAKER_02Ah, gosh. Um ready for the third one?
SPEAKER_04Yes.
SPEAKER_02You're not doing that. I'm I'm doing terrible, surprisingly considering their own your your own songs. I could see she was going commando.
SPEAKER_04Oh, that's um fake tan with a hint of Nando's.
SPEAKER_02Yep. I'm gonna give you that because that is exactly what the next story is.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Uh yeah, so I could see she was going commando. She wore a fake tan with a hint of Nando's.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so that is uh that's a song about Prince of Wales Road in Norwich.
SPEAKER_02I'd think that was off your EP. I don't think that's uh Mamma Not Fish one.
SPEAKER_04That that that that that's uh that's that's original. It's it's an original that was a mammal. I originally wrote it as a solo.
SPEAKER_02Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_04But then we did perform it as mammal. We did perform it because we wanted to what we did is we wanted to get into the paper for something.
SPEAKER_05Right.
SPEAKER_04So what we did is we released that song and we we actually said because it was about Prince of Wales Road in Norwich. Yeah, and there's an interview with us in the paper walking across Prince of Wales Road, like Abbey Road.
SPEAKER_02Like Abbey Road, I remember, I remember. Um this one might be quite difficult. So Only Way Out of Here is Oh, that's over my dead body. Yeah, that's the next line as well.
SPEAKER_04Do you know what? We only ever performed that live once.
SPEAKER_02Over my dead body.
SPEAKER_04Joe even said to us, he said, Yeah, that's a cracking song. But the only reason we only ever performed it once, because it's completely different.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's quite a slow one, really.
SPEAKER_04It is, but it's also quite rocky. Yeah. And we're we're a scar band, but we we yeah, we only ever performed it once, and we did actually say, me and Joe said that we would have to rewrite it with a scar beat, but it never really worked.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I can see why it wouldn't work. I I like that one.
SPEAKER_04Benji does vocals on that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Benji does a lot of the vocals, yeah. Oh. He actually wrote those vocals as well, if I remember rightly. It's his idea to come up with the the way that last vocal bit ends up.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02It's a good one. Number five, Freddy?
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Was it ever so easy to sell your soul?
SPEAKER_04That's everyone but me.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it was.
SPEAKER_04Which version do you want?
SPEAKER_02Uh, the recorded version.
SPEAKER_04Okay. Because there are two versions to that song. I know. One that could should we just tell that
The Rude Version And The Rewrite
SPEAKER_04story?
SPEAKER_02You can absolutely tell that story. This is your this is this is Father's Day. This is your podcast.
SPEAKER_04This is uh this yeah, this this is a song about um somebody that I used to go to school with who's who's fairly f was famous. And I would say she's famous.
SPEAKER_02She's famous, yeah. She's famous.
SPEAKER_04And I wrote this song, but I wrote two versions, and I performed it to the guys once in in in Mammal, and we sat there. Bearing in mind, Joe's Joe is a little bit of a rummen, shall we say, in that he's not scared to kind of do things that are a little bit out there, yeah. Yeah, so he of all the people to say we cannot do that song live ever was Joe. Yeah, he went, There is no way we can play that song live because of the lyrics that I wrote, because they are disgusting, they are filthy. I mean, we're we're talking like um Chris Pratt and Parks and Rec joke, filthy, yeah. And so I rewrote the lyrics so to make to sort of like calm it down a little bit, and we do perform that live. That's one of our last songs that we do live, and everyone loves it, and that's where we get everyone bouncing. In fact, that's where we got Ferry Fest, the whole 10 was bouncing, and but on the original EP that I've got so not on the so you can only you can hear this song on like on SoundCloud, by the way. The original the original version is on SoundCloud, but if you had a physical copy of the CD, there is a secret track. There's five minutes of silence at the end, and then this track comes on, and it's just me doing an acoustic version of that song. And I remember I went to I performed it one night in the doghouse, and Grant said to me, He said, Oh, play everyone but me. I said, Which version do you want? He said, Uh go on, do do the rude one. So I performed it live in the doghouse, and Bill Downs was in there over the time. Yeah, and Bill literally spat his beer over Grant. It was like, my god, that's hilarious.
SPEAKER_02It it's a little uh um what's the word? Yeah, it's it's not quite nice to the person that you've written it about. No, it is.
SPEAKER_04Well, no, it's it's not. It is nice, it's it's well it's not it's a bit um it's like it's me saying it's a product of the time, I think, as well. Like it's yeah, it's yeah, it's like me saying, Why did you have to do that to be famous? Yeah, yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_02Um but there's nothing wrong with that.
SPEAKER_04No, no, absolutely not.
SPEAKER_02Absolutely not. But yeah, um, so the lyric was Was it ever so easy to sell your soul? So easy to sell your soul though.
SPEAKER_04Uh I can't remember. No, I don't know.
SPEAKER_00How do you not know your own lyrics?
SPEAKER_02I can't think was like how can you not sing along and get it? Ban myself a drink, get ready for the weekend, everybody knows. It's really weird singing that as your daughter.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um live in in a in a thing. Yeah. So was it ever so easy to sell your soul those 15 minutes? Are you really a star? Didn't get that one.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Bugger. Bugger. I'm not getting it, I'm not I'm rubbish at this.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_04These are all the jokey songs that I've written you've you've chosen.
SPEAKER_02I've done I've done your whole repertoire.
SPEAKER_04Have you? Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_02You need to wait.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, okay, okay, okay.
SPEAKER_02Uh softly, softly, I'll go.
SPEAKER_04Over my um break my stride.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but what's the next lyric? You're not you're not finishing the lyrics. Uh Sovly, savely, I'll go.
SPEAKER_04Oh god. I really am crap at this.
SPEAKER_02How are you not getting this? I know, I just need to. If Benji watches this, he's gonna be like I know, I know.
SPEAKER_04David?
SPEAKER_02David! He's gonna give you a David.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah. Uh it is break my stride.
SPEAKER_02It is break my stride, you're correct.
SPEAKER_04I can't remember.
SPEAKER_02Sarfly, safely, I'll go. But there's one thing you should know.
SPEAKER_04You'll never break my stride.
SPEAKER_02You so poor at this.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. I'd be crap on Buzzcocks, wouldn't I?
SPEAKER_02They feed you lies, control your mind.
SPEAKER_04Oh, this is uh feed you lies, control your mind. Um, this is what you're gonna do about that. Uh, what you're gonna do about this funky song.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so what's the next lyric?
SPEAKER_04It's I can't hear the tune in my head. Uh they feed you lies, control your soul. Uh control your mind. Control your mind. Um my god, no. I've got I've lost it.
SPEAKER_02Open up your wings, heart and soul, you will fly. I think is the lyric.
SPEAKER_04Yes, it is the lyric. Um open up your wings, heart and soul, you will fly. So there's I don't know if you've ever seen us live when I'm I turn to Joe at one point in the song and I do that, and Joe does that as well.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_04Because the way I sing it, again, the whole diction thing. It sounds like I'm saying shark.
SPEAKER_02Oh it's not.
SPEAKER_04It's shot. Shots. It's shot.
SPEAKER_02Uh number eight.
SPEAKER_04Go on.
SPEAKER_02Break down those walls.
SPEAKER_04Break down those walls. That's what you're gonna do about that as well, isn't it?
SPEAKER_02I think it might be, yeah. Yeah. You didn't have exactly 20 songs for me to push out of, so I did do a couple of yeah, that's what that's Watcher as well.
SPEAKER_04But I can't remember the next line.
SPEAKER_02Break down those walls, answer that call.
SPEAKER_04Call. Yeah, break down those walls. That's Watcher. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_04Because I just name the song.
SPEAKER_02You're doing well with naming the song. Not exactly finishing the lyric, which is the point of the game, but it's fine. Yeah. You're definitely gonna get this one. Go on. I hope. Bikinis on Flash and I Don't Turn My Head.
SPEAKER_04Gypsy Summer Dress.
SPEAKER_02So what's the lyrics?
SPEAKER_04Uh Bikini. Bikinis on Flesh. Bikini's bikinis on Flesh.
SPEAKER_02Oh, old Flesh. That makes more sense, actually.
SPEAKER_04Sorry. Yeah, bikini. Um That Don't Turn My Head.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that Don't Turn My Head.
SPEAKER_04Uh Nothing Beats You in That Gypsy Summer Dress.
SPEAKER_02Nothing beats You beats you in that Gypsy Summer Dress. Um do you want to talk about that song?
SPEAKER_04Uh in what way?
SPEAKER_02The fact that it's written about mum and she doesn't even own a gypsy summer dress.
SPEAKER_04Well I well, yeah. Well, the reason I can't remember the timeline now on this one.
Gypsy Summer Dress And Gig Stories
SPEAKER_04And I think the reason I said that because I got scared, didn't I? That that that lady was stalking me. Now back to that.
SPEAKER_02Oh, I didn't think we were going to talk about that. But okay, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. And she would like come to my gigs and do whatever. And uh at one point I just said, and this is a because she said I wasn't wearing my wedding ring at the time. So I said, No, I'm married, leave me alone. And uh I wasn't wearing my wedding ring at the time. Because you lost your lost my wedding ring. And she was there, she was there at a gig, and I saw her, and your mum was there as well. So I said, This is a song about my lovely wife who's there.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, yeah. I do remember, yeah.
SPEAKER_04But the actual song Gypsy Summer Dress is actually about Stevie Nicks.
SPEAKER_02Ah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Because the way that she was very witchy and you know, the way that she had the stage performance and all of that. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Nothing beats you in the gypsy, the gypsy summer dress. I think that's one of my favourites, Mammon Off Fish songs. Uh go listen to Mamma Off Fish, Gypsy Summer Dress is a good one. It is indeed.
SPEAKER_04In fact, listen to all of this. We um we entered Battle of the Bands with that song. Did you? Yeah, with Gypsy. That's good.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Alright.
SPEAKER_04We always go from Gypsy straight into Watcher because they're the same key.
SPEAKER_02I see, I see. Now the next one, you're gonna have to go back. Go back in your mind, ready?
SPEAKER_04Okay. Yeah, well I ain't gonna get this, am I?
SPEAKER_02All around is death and decay.
SPEAKER_04This is people.
SPEAKER_02Nope.
SPEAKER_04No, not all around is death and decay. No.
SPEAKER_02All around is death and decay. He don't know if he'll survive the day.
SPEAKER_04Oh shit, this is um far away.
SPEAKER_02It is far away, yes. Yeah, that's far away. Unfortunately, you don't get the point, but um that's well back in the listening to you.
SPEAKER_04That was my very first song. Yeah, very first song.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I thought that one would get you.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Why why am I here? I don't know. We're recording a podcast. Why I am I here is what I've been.
SPEAKER_04Why I am I here?
SPEAKER_02Why am I here? I need to disappear.
SPEAKER_04Oh, that is oh shit. That is espere.
SPEAKER_02It is espere. That was the hardest one. You sing that so fast, I had no that's all I could get from it. So even though I've written it wrong as well.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. I sing it fast, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, espere. Stop trying to.
SPEAKER_04Means get back in Spanish.
SPEAKER_02Oh, in Spanish.
SPEAKER_04It means stand back sort of thing in Spanish. Because I originally wrote the song, I wanted to do it as almost like as uh with the Spanish kind of classical type guitar in it. Um but it didn't kind of work, and the word get back didn't kind of fit well, so I used we'll use espere.
SPEAKER_00Espere.
SPEAKER_04And because interlude goes into espere.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_04It's the same.
SPEAKER_02I listened to the whole of interlude thinking, I wonder if it has any lyrics.
SPEAKER_04It does not. No lyrics. No lyrics. Do you know the story of that song?
How Interlude And Esperé Were Made
SPEAKER_04How he wrote that?
SPEAKER_02Uh no.
SPEAKER_03So tell our listeners.
SPEAKER_04So we were we were in the studio and we uh in the recording, and I said uh I said, laughing, I said, wouldn't it be funny if we've we had like an interlude in the middle of an EP? Because you know, like you know, you get an album of like 10, 12, 16 songs, whatever. Occasionally they have like in the middle of the album, there's like a like an instrumental or something just completely different. I mean, they do it in um in Panic at the disco, does it in one of one of their albums? And I said, I said, there's a laugh, should we do it? Because like as though like the EP's really long, so we need like an intermission in between it, like these four songs. And we looked up, we and Joe came up with the idea because he's usually he uses like big old brush drums and that for a spare. So we said, Well, should we do it before a spare and have it in the same key? But then so it goes into a spare. And when we went in the studio, that was pretty much off the cuff. Nice, and we just did it there. Although Peach's solo that we did like we recorded different solos and then we chopped and changed and put it together to create that one solo, which is why Peach can never remember what he's actually playing, because it's a mixture of all different solos. Um, but it's very Floydy.
SPEAKER_02I see.
SPEAKER_04It's very Floydy. We did it in style of Floyd, and then interlude goes straight into Esperis, it's in the same key. So I arpeggio what is it, E minor D C. I'm just I'm just arpeggioing that over the top.
SPEAKER_02So you can remember that, but you can't remember the lyrics you actually sing of all your songs.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Yeah, and then uh yeah, and then Peach is doing it. But although when we did it in October, our final gig, we'd got Pierre to do it on Sacks. Final gig. Yeah. We got Pierre to do it on the sacks, the the solo.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02In this uh you're ready for question twelve?
SPEAKER_04I am indeed.
SPEAKER_02Let the music take control.
SPEAKER_04Let the music take control. Uh let go. Is that let go?
SPEAKER_02It is let go. Can you do the rest of the lyrics?
SPEAKER_04Uh no.
SPEAKER_02Let the music take control. Cast off your inhibitions, free your mind and your mind. Your body, your soul. That's a great line. You're doing shit at this point.
SPEAKER_04I know, I know.
SPEAKER_02You've only got three right. Feeding the ego, the pathetic man.
SPEAKER_04Oh, this is uh dreaming of the sea again.
SPEAKER_02Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_04I'm feeding the ear of a pathetic man 'cause I want to be free. That's why I'm dreaming of sea. Zombies and soons all around, feeding off my soul while they're keeping me down, and I want to be free, that's why I'm dreaming of sea. Yeah, I remember it now.
SPEAKER_02This one's gonna be quite difficult.
SPEAKER_04Go on.
SPEAKER_02Days are long.
SPEAKER_04They are Days are long. Shit. I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Uh the clue is gypsy summer dress.
SPEAKER_04Oh, uh I love this line. Day days are long.
SPEAKER_02Um if this is what you actually sang, because again, diction. It sounded pretty to me.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Never mind my diction. What about Jamie from Killer?
SPEAKER_03Or any or or Panic at the disco or when we covered boy.
SPEAKER_04When we covered Thunder Thighs, I had to ring Jamie up and go, Jamie, what do you sing in this line?
SPEAKER_03What are you saying? What are you singing?
SPEAKER_04Um, was it Days Are Long?
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Uh it's Gypsy. It's definitely Gypsy. Yeah, yeah. Uh I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Days are long and the night's sublime. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. What a line. Yeah. I love that.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Didn't get the right. Sunshine pours like wine.
SPEAKER_02And the sunshine pours like wine.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Days are long, the night's sublime and sunshine.
SPEAKER_02I think I th I like the way you sing that bit. Like I think the tone is really nice and the way you the the way you extend the syllables and the the vowels in the in the it's just really pretty. The way you sing it. Oh, thank you for modest. Um okay, uh, number 15. So we've only got sorry, I've got a bit of hair that's like not in my mouth, but also.
SPEAKER_04I'm doing really well at this.
SPEAKER_02This is shit. When I look back at all the things I've done uh how old is this? Old.
SPEAKER_04I was gonna say, that's not that's not a mammal song. Good memory. That's not a mammal song. I don't know.
SPEAKER_02I think when I listened to this song off your first EP or your first recorded album, I think you wrote this about mum.
SPEAKER_04Did I?
SPEAKER_02The song is called You. Am I wrong?
SPEAKER_04I don't even remember that song.
SPEAKER_02You wrote you definitely wrote it about someone that you liked.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I don't know if it was mum or not. I'm assuming it is, yeah. Given the time frame. But um So when I look back at all the things I've done, the bad times fade and I remember only fun. Yeah. That was so sweet. I was listening to that and I was like, I think you wrote that about your mum. Yeah, I did.
SPEAKER_04I did write that about your mum, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's an old old gold, that one. Yeah, I really enjoyed listening to that.
SPEAKER_04I did, yeah, I did write that about your mum, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Okay. Another old one?
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_02Jealousy's a bitch.
SPEAKER_04It is. Uh no idea. That's way that's that's like 15 years ago.
SPEAKER_02Crazy Daisy?
SPEAKER_04Shit, yeah. Yeah. God, I can't remember.
SPEAKER_00Crazy Daisy, wild and free, shadow from the world, cause she just couldn't see. Crazy Daisy, but never me. Jealousy's a bitch. Don't you agree?
SPEAKER_04Don't you agree? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02I thought that was a great line. Yeah. It's funny because you I said jealousy's a bitch, and you went, yeah, it is. And I was like, Yeah, like that's what you that's what you were saying.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Uh, okay, ready?
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Uh we're going, we're going back to new now.
SPEAKER_04Okay, back to mammal.
Japan Charts And Party Days
SPEAKER_02Number 17.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02The freaks come out.
SPEAKER_04Oh, this is uh This is When I'm Dead.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, great song.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, uh, this this did really well in Japan.
SPEAKER_03We made the charts in Japan. What, reggae charts or just general charts? Charts in Japan. It was great. It was insane. This did really well in Japan. It really did.
SPEAKER_04I know, because I I even made the joke, I did like the big in Japan joke on stage, and I still said we still never got that Japanese tour. No, but yeah. They'd love you. Yeah, it was really bizarre. We charted in Japan. It was it was nuts, it was absolutely nuts. We had radio stations contact us and like it was it was insane. It was absolutely insane. Uh, so what was the line again? The freaks come out. Uh The Freaks Come Out. Um oh god. I'll tell you what that. I will tell you what that song's about. I don't think I've ever told this story before. Um I'll sleep when I'm dead. Uh I can't remember. I can't remember the line.
SPEAKER_02The freaks come out, they look so pretty. Yes. I loved that.
SPEAKER_04What is the um no, ah, no, no, it's not they look so pretty.
SPEAKER_02Oh, did I get the lyrics wrong?
SPEAKER_04Got the lyrics wrong. Oh, okay. The freaks come out, we look so pretty.
SPEAKER_02Ah. Are we the freaks?
SPEAKER_04We're the freaks.
SPEAKER_02So I'll give you a tick for that one because you corrected me. Okay, yeah.
SPEAKER_04So what that song is about is Pam's house.
SPEAKER_02Ah. You're sleep when you're dead, as in as in your partying so hard.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. And what it was is because we were we were called at at Pam's House, all the Pam's dancers, and everyone went to Pam's house. We we would say we we actually did one of the lines was The Freaks Come Out.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04So I put it in the song The Freaks Come Out, We Look So Pretty Because we're all dressed up.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I like it, I like it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and that yeah, it's um sorry for getting the lyric cross. Yeah, it's uh it's about Pam's house, about my Pam's house days. When I was the dancer.
SPEAKER_02When you are a dancer.
SPEAKER_04That yeah, honestly, that's uh that's a great song. I like that one. I'll sleep when I'm dead.
SPEAKER_03But yeah, that that chart in Japan.
SPEAKER_04That was that was probably um that was probably our biggest single.
unknownNice.
SPEAKER_04That was actually that was even more popular than We Own the Night.
SPEAKER_02We own the We Own the Nun. I don't think I've done any lyrics for We Own the Night. Um, okay. Um I'm not as strong as I seem.
SPEAKER_04I'm not as strong as I seem. That is hideaway.
SPEAKER_02It is not.
SPEAKER_04Is it not?
SPEAKER_02No.
SPEAKER_04Oh, okay. It's Karma Boomerang. Karma Boomerang. That's Joel's favourite song.
SPEAKER_02I like Karma Boomerang
The Most Personal Songs On The List
SPEAKER_02as well. I'm not as strong as I seem. I think I know what this song's about.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I have to be careful, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I'll say I'm not as strong as I seem.
SPEAKER_04I can't remember.
SPEAKER_02The boy I used to be.
SPEAKER_04Oh, is it, yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah, that was karma's a um it's a very personal song. That is a very personal song.
SPEAKER_02You don't have to talk about that one if you don't want to do that.
SPEAKER_04That and hide that and hideaway are very personal.
SPEAKER_02Uh okay. Um Underneath That Mask.
SPEAKER_04Uh it's hideaway. It's hideaway, yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02You don't have to talk about it. You'd have to talk about it. But what do you know do you remember the next lyric? Uh Underneath That Mask.
SPEAKER_05No.
SPEAKER_02Your heart is breaking fast. Oh detrimental line emotionally.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Okay, we're gonna we're gonna end on a cool one.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_02That's this is the last one. And then I'm gonna I'm gonna ring through them all from the start.
SPEAKER_04Okay. Are you gonna sing them?
SPEAKER_02Uh I don't think I can sing all of them. Okay, but music is what feelings sound like.
SPEAKER_04Uh that is watch you. No, it's not. Music is what feelings sound like. That's a brilliant line.
SPEAKER_02Frickin' epic line there.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Uh thank you very much. Um I I loved performing this song as well. Yeah. Because I sing that really kind of music is what feelings sound like.
SPEAKER_02How do you not know what the song is? That's what I'm trying to- Let go.
SPEAKER_04Oh, it's let go, yeah. It's let go, yeah, yeah, it's let go.
SPEAKER_02What you gotta do with it?
SPEAKER_04No, that's what you I know. I know, I just that's what you said. Oh, the first time we performed Let Go. Yeah, place went absolutely nuts. We hadn't even recorded it. I like it. We'd literally just because we've got people, and yeah, the whole place went nuts.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And that was a brand new song. We'd never performed it before, so no one knew it. So that's why now we finish on Let Go.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's a great one.
SPEAKER_04And that's and in fact, you got you look on my profile, there's a point where I'm at Epic Studio or Epic uh on stage, and uh, it's all blue lights behind me, and I'm like kneeling down, like right down, and that's let go.
SPEAKER_02Nice, that is um, so music is what feelings sound like man or woman, young or old.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah great song.
SPEAKER_02Uh okay, so you got none one, two, three, four, five, six out of twenty.
Scorecards, Confessions And Final Recap
SPEAKER_02Yes. On your own music. So we had uh dreaming of the sea. There's zombies in suits all around feeding off my soul while they're keeping me down. And uh want to be free. That's why I'm dreaming of the dreaming of the sea. What key is that in? Because I don't know what's key, I just sang that.
SPEAKER_04B minor.
SPEAKER_02Oh, is it B minor? So you corrected me on this one. So it's not face to face with the Bride of Chucky.
SPEAKER_00Face to face with the bride of Chucky.
SPEAKER_04She's got a penis for Wookiee. Yeah, it is face-to-face, yeah.
SPEAKER_00The price you pay for alcohol and nookie, so wake up.
SPEAKER_02Don't forget, get dressed.
SPEAKER_04Sneak out, no, just go.
SPEAKER_02I could see she was going commando. She wore Vig Ten and Hintonandos. You sing that in a really weird key, and I can't sing it. It's in F minor, I think. It's a really odd key.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it is really weird key.
SPEAKER_02I don't know how this goes. Uh only way out of here is over my dead body.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Only way out of here. Over my dead body. Over my dead body. Only way out of here is over my dead. Over my dead body.
SPEAKER_00Was it ever so easy to sell your soul those fifteen minutes? Are you really a star?
SPEAKER_04Enjoy the parties and the candy and the paps and fascists, and I suppose when the hits start to tumble. Well, there'll always be a place for you in the jungle land.
SPEAKER_00Saw you just the other day.
SPEAKER_04Everyone but me. Yeah. Um you sing, I can I can sing along.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, funny that.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Uh softly, softly I'll go. But there's one thing you should know. Is that going sort of?
SPEAKER_04Not really. No. Confuse me now. Let's break my stride.
SPEAKER_02Nobody gonna slow me down.
SPEAKER_03Oh no. I gotta keep on moving. Nobody gotta break my stride.
SPEAKER_04Should I do a little confession now about that song?
SPEAKER_03Oh, did you steal the lyrics from that?
SPEAKER_04No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. You know there's that bit halfway through the song where Joe stops drumming and there's just me playing guitar for a few things, and then I'll come back in on Dodge. Yeah, I mean that ain't me playing, we put that on the backing track.
unknownI can never get it.
SPEAKER_03I could never get the timing. Oh, it's all coming out now.
SPEAKER_04Put it on the backing track.
SPEAKER_02Um, they feed you lies, control your mind, open up your wings, heart, soul, you will fly. What a great frickin' line that is. And dad don't turn my head, cause nothing beats you in that gypsy, that gypsy summer dress. Brilliant. Um yeah, so why I'm here, I need to disappear. Espere.
SPEAKER_04Stop trying to break through. Espere. Espere. I don't need you. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Let the music take control. Cast off your inhibitions, free your mind, your body, your soul.
SPEAKER_04Brilliant. Watcher.
SPEAKER_02What are you gonna do with that?
SPEAKER_04Uh-huh. I stole a line and watcher from a more cheaper track.
SPEAKER_01I see. Cheeky.
SPEAKER_04Yes.
SPEAKER_01Feeding the eagle, the pathetic man. I wanna be free. Swam, dreaming of the sea.
SPEAKER_04Mm-hmm. That's about being at work and wanting to be anywhere but work.
SPEAKER_02Days are long and the night sublime. Oh, just such a good line. Um, when I look back at all the things I've done, the bad time fade and I remember only fun. It's just so cute. And it's not even something that people can hear. No one can hear that other than me that has a CD of your first album.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Jealousy's a bitch, don't you agree? Great line. Uh The Freaks Come Out, We Look So Pretty. What? Hannah, you did swearies. I was complimenting you.
SPEAKER_04I know, I know.
SPEAKER_02The Freaks Come Out, We Look So Pretty. Uh I'm not.
SPEAKER_04What's the first line to When I'm Dead? First word. Uh, hold on.
SPEAKER_02I don't know. I don't know the first line.
SPEAKER_04Uh what?
SPEAKER_02Fake fan, clearly. I'm a fake fan.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Uh held on.
SPEAKER_02Music is what feelings sound like. Man, woman, younger.
