A cult TV show isn’t just “underrated”. It’s the kind of series you quote without thinking, rewatch like a ritual, and use as a shortcut language with people who get it. Today we’re getting properly nerdy about what makes a show earn that status, from being cancelled too soon to being too weird for mainstream schedules, or simply arriving before the audience is ready.

We start with the feeling of cult fandom itself: the intensity, the community, the hidden jokes and callbacks that only reveal themselves on a second watch. Then we put that definition to the test with big hitters and deep cuts. Firefly gets the full treatment, including how Fox aired it out of order and why that helped create one of TV’s most loyal fanbases. From there we jump into Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, picking favourite characters and talking about how growing up changes what you notice on a rewatch.

Things get stranger with Twin Peaks and the surreal joy of not fully understanding what you’re seeing, then we head into paranormal territory with The X-Files. We also fly the flag for British cult energy with Misfits, The Prisoner, Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace and The Mighty Boosh. On the modern side, we dig into why Scrubs balances laughs and heartbreak so well, why Dark feels like a masterclass in planned storytelling, and why Severance turns a simple workplace idea into a moral maze.

If you’ve ever forced a friend to “just watch the first two episodes”, you’re one of us. Subscribe, share the show with a fellow fan, and leave us a review, then tell us: which cult series owns your brain?

Hello and welcome to a very special podcast episode by BonusDad, Bonus Daughter. We are here to talk about Cult TV today.

SPEAKER_00

Do you sorry? Do you know what's really weird? Right, I normally look at you straight on like this, don't I? I never normally look over there where the camera is. And I've just realised for the first time how long have we been recording in here? I can actually see you in the mirror.

SPEAKER_04

Hello. Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Why have we not been doing that?

SPEAKER_00

Do you know what? Really? Like, how long have we been recording? And I can literally talk to you like that and look at the camera as well as looking at you across the thing. How many episodes have we recorded? We've got a natural bloody mirror there. Which has been there the whole time. And I've never noticed it before. Well, I've done of course I've noticed it before.

SPEAKER_03

Well, yeah, I've noticed it too.

SPEAKER_00

But I've just not noticed that I'm not.

SPEAKER_03

I've never made eye contact with you through the mirror before.

SPEAKER_00

But I can actually look at you like this.

SPEAKER_03

This might be our professional change.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. So we can actually talk to the talk to each other.

SPEAKER_03

Like I'm talking to you in the mirror. And it doesn't feel rude.

SPEAKER_00

It doesn't feel rude because I'm talking to you.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and I'm almost directly underneath the camera.

SPEAKER_00

Even though you're there. You're there.

SPEAKER_02

I thought I'd messed up the intro then.

SPEAKER_00

You were like laughing and I was like, what's going on? Well, normally I don't look at the camera, do I?

SPEAKER_02

Well, no, not at all, but you can now.

SPEAKER_00

But now, because I just I just so happened, I thought actually for this one intro, I will actually look at the camera. And I was like, oh, there's Hannah.

SPEAKER_02

It it's actually better for me if you do look at the camera, because when I take that still of the um the opa for the opus clips. No, no, no, no, no, no. For um, but yes, for the opus clips.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

But also when I do the oh my god, sorry, thumbnail.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I I can never really find one of you looking at the camera. I try.

SPEAKER_00

No, but yeah, I can actually joke so I can look at the camera. Well, actually look at you beyond the camera.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

It's like double Hannah. I can see you in my peripheral.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, I don't have peripheral, but yeah, I can I can certainly see you.

SPEAKER_00

There you are. Hello, Hannah.

SPEAKER_02

Hello. Hello, father. I sometimes look at myself down here.

SPEAKER_00

What on the screen? Occasionally. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Occasionally. I'll be there just just to check it's still recording.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

It's like a part of anxiety in me that I'm like, oh no, what if it's not recording?

SPEAKER_00

No, it's definitely recording. I can see the I can see the little red light. Um so yeah, so today, today we're going to be talking about Culture TV.

SPEAKER_02

Oh yeah, sorry, yeah, we are.

SPEAKER_00

And uh we do have our little guest still with us.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, we do, little archie.

SPEAKER_00

Little Archie. He's I say he's little Archie, he's not little, is he?

SPEAKER_02

Well, he'll always be little Archie, too. Archie, come here, come on camera.

unknown

No.

SPEAKER_00

No, he doesn't, he's not. He's too hot, he's too hot. He's he's too hot because it's it's still Maid Bank holiday.

SPEAKER_02

How many times are you gonna mention this? You're gonna mention this every single podcast.

SPEAKER_00

Um do you know I don't I don't like hot weather. I know we whinge like merry hell, don't we? Like if it's too cold or too hot. We the one thing we love to talk about in England is the weather because it's so interchangeable.

SPEAKER_02

You sometimes get four seasons in one day.

SPEAKER_00

You really do. I had this discussion the other day actually, we were talking about um Scarfell Pike.

SPEAKER_03

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And random, but okay. Yeah, no, we're just talking about and somebody went up there and they said, Oh, and somebody else said, I'll make sure you take proper clothing. Like, why? It's just a hill in England. It's like, and then when they came back, I was like, Oh, I got it now. Because literally it can go from roasting hot to freezing cold in an instant.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, because uh treacherous, actually. It's not like um like California or Florida where it's always hot and sunny.

SPEAKER_03

California.

SPEAKER_00

We have this why if we have to as many clothes, like I've still got my legs out shorts.

SPEAKER_02

I'm not getting my feet out again. People know I'm wearing linens, it's okay.

SPEAKER_00

Let's not just snorted. Um let's not have that conversation again.

SPEAKER_02

No, I don't I'm just yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Um so yeah, so I wrote this one last night as well very quickly.

SPEAKER_02

All these were a slap dash drop job. Slap dash job. I just very hard to say.

SPEAKER_00

I just basically went, right, think of ten or ten or fifteen um cult TV shows. Okay, that's good. And I want to see if you've seen them. And I know some of them you definitely have. Definitely have.

Defining Cult TV And Fandom

SPEAKER_00

But first of all, let's just talk about what a cult TV show is. Yeah, absolutely.

SPEAKER_02

Give us give us a definition.

SPEAKER_00

So a cult TV show isn't necessarily a flop. No. That is incredibly important, but because some cult TV shows were actually ratings disasters.

SPEAKER_02

Oh.

SPEAKER_00

They never, you know, but that's why they they became cults, they weren't really mainstream.

SPEAKER_02

Which way are we looking at each other now? Are we using the mirror?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, let's use the mirror.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

So some cults were ratings disasters, and others were massive hits, but what they all share is intensity.

SPEAKER_03

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. And a cult audience doesn't casually just enjoy the show.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

This is really weird. It's like flitting between the two. They quote it, which we do.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, I do.

SPEAKER_00

We I mean we quote, I mean, I quote TV shows like Supernatural, we quote the boys earlier on one of the other episodes. That people always re-watch it as well. I mean, there's one cult TV show that I have watched I don't know how many times, and I'll wait for a little while and then I will watch it again, and that is number one on my list. Oh, okay. Um, they force friends to watch it, they force family members to watch it, yes, and I have forced you to watch many cult TV shows. Watch this, eyes open. Yes, and this is something that you've done. They write theories about background characters and fan fiction and yes, yeah, yeah, you've done that before, haven't you?

SPEAKER_02

What have you written fanfiction for? Uh when I I well, when I was really young, it was Harry Potter. As I got older, it was supernatural. What else did I write? Um Harry Potter was my main one, to be fair. I wrote quite a lot of spin-offs of that. Um just because I really liked the world. Um my thoughts on JK Rowling. Um, that's by the by uh back then uh I was not aware and therefore, yeah, really enjoyed the fandom. Yeah, it's really hard to be a Harry Potter fan right now, like it's really tricky to navigate, but we move. So yeah, uh Harry Potter back in the day and then Supernatural. I think as I got older, sometimes I've written uh uh not necessarily TV shows, but um supernatural uh not supernatural, sorry, Maximum Ride. Maximum ride, yeah, yeah. So I used to write a lot of spin-off stuff for that as well.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Some stuff that I've used recently, actually. I went back over some stuff that I'd kept. Yeah, I think that's I can't think of I've never written any spin-off for Gilmore Girls or anything like that. I I prefer the more outer world exactly.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

In a real world, but slightly supernatural.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Uh uh, what's it called? Urban uh my book will be classed as urban fantasy.

SPEAKER_00

Urban fantasy, yeah. Um, so cult TV shows generally have at least one of these ingredients, which is weirdness, weirdness, originality, originality, a strong identity, a strong identity, and the feeling that the audience understands something other people don't.

SPEAKER_03

Boom.

SPEAKER_00

I think that's the big one. Yeah, that is the big one, especially like like we said with the boys when he mentions the Impala. We all went. I get that reference. Yeah, I get it, and like in Castle, when Nathan Fillion walks out in that brown coat, you're like, Yeah, I know what you're doing. I know what you're doing, I know what you're doing.

SPEAKER_02

I love Castle. I know, it's really I watched that till the end, I really enjoyed it.

SPEAKER_00

It's really good, really good.

SPEAKER_02

It's so it's so crap, but silly and but good. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so the cult fandom feels quite exclusive. It's like it's like you're joining a secret society. It does, it does, it's a community, it's a community-led thing, and people communicate in references to that cult TV show, yeah. Yeah, like if I was to say, and I've I've already mentioned one of the shows, like I said it the other night and I just went, shiny. Mum didn't get it at all. Mum didn't get it at all, but but I knew what I meant. Um, so you basically to make something a cult TV show, they say that there's three things.

SPEAKER_01

Go on.

SPEAKER_00

One is that it was cancelled too soon.

SPEAKER_02

Not necessarily, but yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And I'm still referencing this one particular show, I know you should which is just it.

SPEAKER_02

I agree, it was cancelled too soon.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, but we'll come on to that and what happened with that particular show because they did they ruined that on purpose. The other thing is it's too weird for mainstream TV.

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm. Um it's normally a little bit out there, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and let's take-I mean, I will mention that like Twin Peaks. Don't think you've ever seen Twin Peaks.

SPEAKER_02

No, I think Stranger Things might even fall into that category.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, yeah, to a degree. Yeah. To a degree. Uh, and then you've got the slow burn discovery, and that is the show that you find that probably was done a little bit ahead of its time, but then you discover it years and years later, and you go, Wow, like the audience was not ready for it. It's like Marty McFly playing Johnny be good.

SPEAKER_03

Right.

SPEAKER_00

You know, you are you guys aren't ready for this yet, but your kids are gonna love it.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so and the other thing is that often cult TV shows have things like hidden jokes, recurring callbacks, layered storytelling, and tiny little details. It's very clever writing. Yeah. Like supernatural. Exactly, where you would not get it on the first watch, but then when you watch it a second time, you're like, oh my god, that would I got that right. You know, that was very clever writing. Um why do people get so attached? Because mainstream hits often aim to please everyone, whereas cult TV shows don't. It's very niche. It it targets an audience, which means it's feels like it was specifically made for them, for that group. Again, Comic Cons, cons, all that type of thing, supernatural con. Uh, and would you all say, would you say, Hannah, that cult TV shows, question for you, are better than mainstream shows?

SPEAKER_02

I don't like a lot of mainstream shows, so maybe I would say yes. I I was never into Game of Thrones.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I wasn't massively into breaking bad, and everyone says that's like massive, like everyone really enjoys that. I wouldn't call that a cult thing, it's just not my thing. Uh, I guess, yeah, I guess, I guess they are better because they have that more niche kind of nerdiness to them that and I mean that in a positive way. Yeah, they just kind of have that community spirit with them.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And I don't know, I just think yeah, I think generally they are better. I've got a few in my head. I'm I'm interested to know what your examples are. Yeah, yeah. Because I've got a few that I would definitely class as cult.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, because it is because they're not just about the TV show, it is all about the other stuff that goes with it.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, absolutely.

SPEAKER_00

And that's what that's why I like cult TV shows so much.

Firefly And How It Was Derailed

SPEAKER_00

So the first one I am going to mention is the one show that I have watched I don't know how many times, and it was cancelled too soon. And the reason why it was cancelled, I don't know if a little story about this one. So basically it's Firefly. Yeah. And I love Firefly. And the reason why it was cancelled, they cancelled it after one season because Fox TV put it on a Friday night against like another mainstream show that everyone else was watching. But the other thing that they did as well, they shoe or showed, shoe, showed, what's the word?

SPEAKER_02

Showed.

SPEAKER_00

Showed.

SPEAKER_02

Depends what the context is.

SPEAKER_00

The episode's out of order.

SPEAKER_02

Oh.

SPEAKER_00

So the first episode they released was an episode called The Train Heist, which was actually episode two. Oh. So when you're watching Firefly and You don't know what's going on. You don't know the characters. You've been plunged into this world.

SPEAKER_02

They wanted it to fail.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. They actively made it fail. So you were Why? Did they fall out of Josh Wedding? Well, they said no, Josh Weddon, obviously he had the success of another cult TV show, which is also listed. Yeah. Um, and then he created Firefly, which is essentially a space western.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And people said no one's gonna watch, and they said no one's gonna watch a space western. So to spite him, I think it was.

SPEAKER_03

Really?

SPEAKER_00

They and you do if you watch the train heist first, you're like, what the hell? Who are these characters? Yeah, what is going on? And then they put the pilot on second.

SPEAKER_02

That's so weird.

SPEAKER_00

And the pilot is the the is a is like an hour and a half, and you're introduced to everybody.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and it's pinnacle for the rest of the show.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly. It is but what they did is obviously because it then got cancelled after one season because the ratings were so low, because no one understood it. But when you actually watch it in order, you're like, this is amazing. Yeah, but then rather than do season two, well then they do, but they had to close the story off, so they then did the film Serenity, yeah, which does close the story off. It's not a canon, but what but uh it is, but what then happened is it's m it gained this massive, massive cult following, and it is brilliant, and I do quote it all the time Firefly all the time. Um, I'm a leaf on the wind. Shiny. Yeah, uh, but what they then do is is they've now resurrected it. Yeah, it's gonna come out with the second season because the fandom basically was like, bring Firefly back. Yeah, Nathan Fillion went around everybody and he got the rights. He spoke to Jos Weddon, he spoke to all the actors, and they're gonna do season two, but they're too old.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, so they're gonna animate it, they're gonna animate it, they'll do voice work, and it's gonna be the story between the Firefly series and Serenity.

SPEAKER_00

Nice, which means Wash is not dead.

SPEAKER_03

Yay!

SPEAKER_00

Yes, Wash is not dead, yes. So essentially, for those of you who don't know what Firefly is about, you can get it on Amazon Prime for free. Yeah, uh it's basically free with your Amazon Prime. Free with your Amazon Prime member description. Uh it's about a ragtag spaceship crew, and they take illegal jobs across a frontier-style galaxy.

SPEAKER_02

They're basically guardians of the galaxy without the guardian part, they're just kind of like pirate rogues.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, they're morally ambiguous as well, very morally ambiguous. But the intro is because.

SPEAKER_02

So is guardians, though.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, guardians is what they're doing.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's it's guardians basically, but funnier.

SPEAKER_00

But again, there's the running jokes throughout it. And one thing one really famous thing about Firefly is that if you watch it, you will notice sometimes they speak in Cantonese. The reason they're speaking in Cantonese is whenever they do that, they are swearing in Cantonese, but they weren't allowed to swear, so what they did is Josh Redden wrote it in Cantonese. So when you hear that, they're actually saying like F's and C's and things like that, and that's how they got away with it. And the running story throughout that entire series with all the little bits is brilliant. Like Marina Brackerin, she plays essentially, she plays a prostitute in in it, but interestingly enough, she's called a companion. But in Firefly, the companions are one of the higher levels. They're the most respected.

SPEAKER_02

It's very cool, it's a very cool concept, actually.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah. Yeah, it's but I love Firefly. Yeah. And yeah, Captain Mal Roberts.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Mal, who's played by Nathan Fillion.

SPEAKER_02

Nathan Fillion. So Nathan Fillion is also in Castle. Um and for those that are not familiar with Nathan Fillion, he's also in Modern Family, he's the weatherman in Modern Family. Uh, what else has it been in the case? The rookie. Oh, yeah, of course, yeah, that's more modern. He's in the rookie castle. Was he in Eureka?

SPEAKER_00

No, no, not Eureka.

SPEAKER_02

What's the other one?

SPEAKER_00

The first thing I ever saw him in is is the the next cult TV show.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, okay.

SPEAKER_00

Because obviously he worked with Joss Weddon.

SPEAKER_02

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

So working with Joss Weddon, he was also in Buffy.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, what who did he play in Buffy's?

SPEAKER_00

Caleb. He was he was the big band in like seasons last season.

SPEAKER_02

Oh damn. I need to rewatch Buffy.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Buffy's great.

Buffy Versus Angel And Favourite Characters

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Buffy's great. You've seen Buffy, so Buffy is the second one on the list.

SPEAKER_02

I've seen Angel all the way through fairly recently, like within the last five years.

SPEAKER_00

Did you prefer Buffy or Angel?

SPEAKER_02

I actually preferred Angel.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I think as I grew up, Angel was Angel was.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, Buffy feels it was great of its time, and as a teenager would have definitely been my favourite. Yeah. But yeah, um, Angel's just a bit more adult. I think I preferred Cordelia in Angel as well. Like I really loved her character and that like she really that character development and role that she played. Um yeah. Um R.I.P. Fred.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Bless her.

SPEAKER_00

Um that final battle at the end.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. I remember that making me really upset.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I liked Sean, the like the the the green devil, sorry, not Sean. Lawn the Green Devil Man as well. He was quite funny. Like I liked how like smooth and charming he was. I based one of my characters after him, actually. I really like, I really like how he comes across.

SPEAKER_00

Well, I liked then how Wesley in Buffy was a bit nerdy, a bit da da, but then in Angel, he then becomes proper badass.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. In Angel. Yeah. Uh Fred almost becomes like the nerdy one. She kind of took on that more nerd one while Wesley still clever, but just more badass. Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. But I mean, who's your favourite character in Buffy?

SPEAKER_02

Mmm. See, instantly my mind went to Willow, but I did really like Faith as well.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Faith was really cool in it.

SPEAKER_00

I liked in all the seasons, you can pick any character in any of the season. Not the one necessarily the season regulars. Because remember the Scooby Gang, because that's what they were called in Buffy, they called themselves the Scooby Gang.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

They they did have different members at different times, didn't they?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Depending on what happened.

SPEAKER_02

I don't really like Xander that much.

SPEAKER_00

Xander, as I I used to like him. He used to be one of my favourite, but as I re-watch it now, I'm like, mmm, you're a bit of a dick.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, look at what he did in Once More with a Feeling. That was all down to him. The entire thing falls apart because of what Xander does.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. I don't like him. Tara's cool.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I I think I think I'm still gonna go with Faith. But she wasn't really like ma she wasn't there all the way through, was she? She kind of bits.

SPEAKER_00

Well, she became she became the slayer after Buffy died in season one. Yeah. Because there were always two slayers because Buffy died. She was a novel.

SPEAKER_02

Was it was was it the other lady first?

SPEAKER_00

It was the other lady first, but then she died, and then Faith became the first one. She's the second slayer after Buffy. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I liked Oz.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, how did I forget Spike? I love Spike. Oh, Spike, yeah, yeah, yeah. Oz is great. He's played by Seth Green. Green, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. He was good because he was kind of Willow's kind of love interest a little bit, wasn't he, in Tiltara.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. But no, Spike Spike. Spike is the best.

SPEAKER_02

Spike's James Redemption.

SPEAKER_00

James Masters. His redemption arc was brilliant.

SPEAKER_02

I didn't realise that he wasn't British.

SPEAKER_00

No, you know.

SPEAKER_02

He's a well good English accent. I also think Billy Butcher and the Boys has a good English accent.

SPEAKER_00

I wasn't going to say something that would have warranted.

SPEAKER_01

That's another pound in the squad, huh?

SPEAKER_00

I know, but I was going to say something that would have warranted it. And Billy Butcher. Yeah, we can't really have that one online. Yeah, so Buffy. But you've you've seen Buffy.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

You enjoyed Buffy.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yep. And we also mentioned Angel. So Angel's Great, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Angel's Great. Uh Doll House, another good one of his.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, Josh Wedd. Josh Weddon actually wrote quite a few cult TV shows.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Dolehouse, Dole House was good. I enjoyed Dole House.

SPEAKER_00

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_02

Didn't last very long. That was only a couple of seasons.

SPEAKER_00

It was again the seasons. Again, that was a wasted opportunity. That could have really gone.

SPEAKER_02

Because Faith was in that she played Echo.

SPEAKER_00

She played Echo, yeah. And Alan Tudick played um Alpha.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, he did. Yeah. Alan Tudick. It's come back again.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah,

Twin Peaks And Loving The Weird

SPEAKER_00

yeah. Um third one I've got is Twin Peaks.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I don't know this one.

SPEAKER_00

Right. Now this was we I used to love Twin Peaks.

SPEAKER_02

Is it is it like a Only Falls and Horses kind of thing?

SPEAKER_00

No, no, no, no. It's set in America, and you had um God, I can't remember his name. He was in the original Dune as well. Carl McClachlan was the main character. He played an FBI. Um he played an FBI.

SPEAKER_02

What is Twin Peaks about? What's the genre?

SPEAKER_00

So it's quite it's really weird. It's as a a girl called Laura Palmer gets killed.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

And the FBI gets sent in to investigate it.

SPEAKER_02

The FBI.

SPEAKER_00

The FBI, which is Carl McLachlan. And it's it's it's very that the town of Twin Peaks has some very strange resonance and it's a bit supernaturally as well.

SPEAKER_03

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

It's written, it's directed by a guy called David Lynch. And if you know any of David Lynch's stuff, you just immediately know it's going to be weird.

SPEAKER_02

And it isn't it Is it like the boys weird or like more like supernatural weird?

SPEAKER_00

No, even weirder than that. As in you don't know even what's going on in some you don't know if what you're watching is reality or dream state.

SPEAKER_02

Is it um okay, let me let me rephrase it? Is it as crude as the boys?

SPEAKER_00

No, no, no, it's not like that. It's not like that. It's not like that at all. So I'll give you one example where Carl McLachlan he goes into a room and you've got um a guy who's quite short, right? And he's talking, but what they did is they then sp turned the language backwards, so you can't even understand what he's saying. It's like really. And you're like, what the hell is going on? And it it's a little bit like Lost, where something will happen, you'll think it connects to something else as well. And it's like a red herring. Yeah, and it's Lost was full of red herrings. And then you've got Laura Palmer's dad, who just keeps having these really weird outbursts of rage, but he's like he's possessed by somebody. Oh it's it's it's really interesting.

SPEAKER_03

Is there a plot to it at all?

SPEAKER_00

I've got no freaking idea. Fair enough. Even to this how many seasons is it? Uh about three six three or four, I think. But even now, if you watch it now, you'd be like, you would be trying to work out what the hell is happening.

SPEAKER_02

What age is this?

SPEAKER_00

When was this uh it's quite adult.

SPEAKER_02

No, no, no. Let me let me rephrase when did it come out? 80s.

SPEAKER_00

80s, 80s. It's very good, but very weird.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's all about the death of it's about him trying to find out who killed Laura Palmer. Who killed Laura Palmer? Yeah.

The X-Files And Paranormal Obsession

SPEAKER_00

X-Files.

SPEAKER_02

X-Files. Uh something to do with the X-Men.

SPEAKER_00

No, Mulder and Scully.

SPEAKER_02

I don't know then.

SPEAKER_00

You never watch X-Files.

SPEAKER_02

No.

SPEAKER_00

I have failed you.

SPEAKER_02

Is there something like they all have powers and abilities?

SPEAKER_00

No, it's where Mulder and Scully are two FBI agents and they d they um they basically investigate the paranormal, supernatural, and alien technology.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, okay. It's like the files. When did this come out?

SPEAKER_00

Uh 90s.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, okay.

SPEAKER_00

Gillian Anderson played Scully and Fox Mulder.

SPEAKER_02

Gillian Anderson as in as in as in sex education.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Oh, damn. Yeah, you you would like the X Files. Would I? Yeah. I think you should watch them.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. Yeah. Where do I wear?

SPEAKER_00

Uh I it must be on a streaming service somewhere. You will be able to get it on a streaming service. It is very, very good. It basically is two FBI it says here, two FBI agents investigate paranormal cases involving aliens, conspiracies, monsters, and unexplained phenomena. That would be on my tree. Minomina. I've not seen this one. Freaks and geeks.

SPEAKER_01

No.

SPEAKER_00

No, I've never seen this one.

SPEAKER_01

Is it a modern one?

SPEAKER_00

It says Misfit Teenagers navigate high school life, awkward friendships, and family pressures in suburban Michigan during the early 1980s.

SPEAKER_02

No.

SPEAKER_00

Never seen that one.

SPEAKER_02

Though Misfits, uh British uh television show where they all got abilities after a freak storm.

SPEAKER_00

That was quite Misfits was good.

SPEAKER_02

That was quite a culty, kind of one.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I never forget there's a goat in the community centre. No a ghost. Oh, a ghost. Like that, like that was fine. A goat was like, whoa, there's a goat. And he's like, oh, a ghost, right, right.

SPEAKER_00

No worries. In fact, Misfits was you could almost argue that Misfits is of like in the same tone as the English version of the boys. Yeah, it was very similar, actually. Not the same story, but the same tone. Yeah, it was the same tone because it was it was about kind of abilities that in in the real world, it's like a real world representation of yeah, if people actually really think super superpowers, yeah. I might have to watch Misfits again.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, there's a god in the community centre.

SPEAKER_00

That was brilliant.

SPEAKER_02

And he doesn't like cheerleaders, do you remember? Yeah. Do you remember why?

SPEAKER_00

God,

Misfits And Gritty British Powers

SPEAKER_00

yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

He's the best character in the he didn't come in it until like season two or three.

SPEAKER_00

He came in it after um, oh my god, I can't remember his name.

SPEAKER_02

One of them died.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, one of them. Well, he didn't, did he? Well he didn't die. He was immortal, but he was buried alive.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, spoilers. Spoiler. Spoiler. Uh Did you ever watch Community?

SPEAKER_03

No.

SPEAKER_00

With Oh God, it it he goes under the name Childish Gambino, but I can't remember his real name.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, I know who you mean.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

But yeah, no, I don't. Um, I watched a few episodes of that. I didn't quite get into it.

SPEAKER_03

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

I didn't quite get into

The Prisoner And Surreal Control

SPEAKER_00

that one. Um, you wouldn't have seen this, but uh is a f is a cult TV show from the 60s called The Prisoner.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, okay.

SPEAKER_00

And what the prison was, a former spy is trapped in a mysterious seaside village where his captors constantly try to undercover why he resigned. And there's this whole thing where as it gets to a certain point, this big white ball comes and chases you.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah. He rings a bell. I thought that was like Shutter Island situation.

SPEAKER_00

It's it's a little bit it not quite.

SPEAKER_02

Doesn't a big ball come and collect him on Shutter Island?

SPEAKER_00

No.

SPEAKER_02

When he tries to escape? And they're all numbered after something?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, they're all numbered like his no, he was number seven, I think he was. Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Wait, is that Shutter Island? That's not Shutter Island. What are you talking about?

SPEAKER_00

The prisoner.

SPEAKER_02

Oh my god, I think I thought that the prisoner was Shutter Island.

SPEAKER_00

No.

SPEAKER_02

I don't think I've seen Shutter Island.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

What you're talking about is what I thought Shutter Island was. Yes, I have seen it.

SPEAKER_00

You have seen the prisoner?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Yeah. Because they're all numbered and then well, yeah. The twist. I know what the twist is because I remember what the twist is, but yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I am aware of this. Yeah, you are.

SPEAKER_00

Ah, you have seen the prisoner.

SPEAKER_02

I I genuinely, I this is bad, this is bad form from me. I genuinely thought what you were describing then was called Shutter Island. Yeah, no. So I haven't seen Shutter Island, then I've only ever seen the prisoner. Because I remember the big ball coming. I remember saying this to Mitchell like a couple of months ago. I was like, there was this thing where like a big ball went in there, and it felt like a like a mental institute, but it kind of wasn't a mental institute.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, then obviously it's the prisoner.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, the prisoner.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, the prisoner.

SPEAKER_02

I must I must ask Mitchell if I must watch that. Is it a cult TV show?

SPEAKER_00

It's very culty. I mean, it's the original was in the 60s.

SPEAKER_02

I think I've seen the more modern one then. There's definitely there's definitely no way I would have said, oh, this was made in the 60s.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

It feels like the same era as Lost. Am I wrong?

SPEAKER_00

Uh yeah, yeah, that was a remake. I think they did a remake. Oh, they remake.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I think was there a film then? Was there a remake of the film? I don't know if it's a film. I just don't know how I would have seen this. But anyway, sorry, carry on.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know. I've been thinking though. But it was very weird because you didn't, again, you it was so surreal, you didn't quite know what to do.

SPEAKER_02

Because everyone's numbered, they didn't have names.

SPEAKER_00

That's right.

SPEAKER_02

Except and they're all trying to find out what number who was. It's all coming back to me.

SPEAKER_00

That's it. That was a prisoner. Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. I don't know if I've seen a film of that, like a movie. I don't version. Anyway.

SPEAKER_00

The next cult TV show has been going for decades.

Doctor Who And Torchwood Preferences

SPEAKER_02

Decades.

SPEAKER_00

Decades. Uh Doctor Who.

SPEAKER_02

Doctor Who, yes.

SPEAKER_00

No, there's only two doctors that I like.

SPEAKER_02

There's only two doctors you like?

SPEAKER_00

I never liked Doctor Who when I was growing up. I found it ridiculous.

SPEAKER_02

Damn. Well, is it it's very it's made for children.

SPEAKER_00

It is made for children. Yeah, but even growing up I didn't like it. But you alright, buddy?

SPEAKER_02

Hello, mate.

SPEAKER_00

He's just, yeah, he's alright. Um just woke up from his nap and he's like, where am I? Was David Tennant and Matt Smith?

SPEAKER_02

I love David Tennant and Matt Smith.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Not Christopher Eccleston player. Didn't really like Christopher Eccleston. No Billy Piper? No, didn't really like it. Didn't really like it. Matt Smith. Amy Pond.

SPEAKER_00

Amy Pond was brilliant. Amy Pond was brilliant.

SPEAKER_02

Our Verio Nebula.

SPEAKER_00

Yes. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Do you like Doctor Who? I enjoyed David Tennant and Matt Smith. And then I lost a little bit of love for it after that. I wasn't, no, I'm not massively into it.

SPEAKER_04

No.

SPEAKER_02

But I knew a lot of people that were and respect that. I really liked Torchwood. I think Torchwood was better.

SPEAKER_00

I liked Torchwood. Yeah. It was darker. It was more adult.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, apart from the last season, I think that spoiled it. But um yeah, up until the same with Scrubs, really. The last season's one. So um other than the new one. But um, but yeah, with with Torchwood, um, I think I enjoyed a lot more. Yeah, it was a bit more adult. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Um moving on to the next one. Scrubs.

Scrubs And The Art Of Balance

SPEAKER_02

Scrubs. Take it away. Scrubs. So Scrubs is a show um uh that follows um basically three main characters, I think is arguably the best way to describe it, and they all start their medical residency at the same time. So they've just come out of medical school. So it's it's JD, who's the main character throughout the whole series, and then his friend Turk, and then they meet another girl called Elliot. Um, and it's all about them basically becoming doctors. So the first season is from them literally coming out of school and going into the hospital for the first time, working with patients, and then how they progress through their career. You're looking at me from there now, you get it. Yeah, looking in the mirror. You get me confused. Yeah, um, so uh, so yeah, that that is what the show's about. Um, what's cool about that show is that you get to hear the inner monologue of JD, and it's it is a comedy, but it also has some really serious tones and serious veins in it. And I think what makes it so good is that it balances those things so perfectly. Yeah. So at one minute you will be absolutely tears bawling because one of your favourite characters has just died. R.I.P. Ben. No spoilers.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And then you've got one moment where they just it makes you laugh out loud because it's the absurdity. It's very similar, um, kind of concept to when Family Guy just randomly goes off on a tangent and then it's just a random animation. The same thing, but in real life. So it'll be JD just dressed up in like a um uh a guard suit, like like outside the queen, like with a fuzzy hat and just doing like weird things and marching band. And you can tell he's got a background in like musical theatre, and that that comes out quite a lot in that those sort of scenes that play out in your head that will never happen. Yeah, and I think it's a really nice insight into someone's mind and how that works. Um, but Scrubs is just so funny. My husband and I quote it constantly, daily. It's so quotable, and it's so well written.

SPEAKER_00

So well written.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, even like Bill Lawrence is the writer.

SPEAKER_00

Hey, brilliant, but the hit something will happen, like there'll be a throwaway comment. Which with the janitor, with with the yeah, like the again, like with the let's take the new season for example. Yeah, okay, the bit with the um floor buffer. Yeah, right. It was a throwaway comment when he says about the floor buffer. He says, Yeah, I like it, yeah, but it makes the it makes the floor slippery. But it's it's a line that's in a set of lines that means absolutely nothing. But then later on, like towards the end of the episode, someone walks behind the floor buffer and falls over.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, that's so clever. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Me saying it like that doesn't really give it as much credit as what it actually is because it's just yeah, it's just brilliantly written. Brilliantly written. Yeah. But yeah, Scrubs, not on that one. Um, another one for you. And

Dark And The Perfectly Planned Ending

SPEAKER_00

this is a this is a cult TV show that we have both watched, and it's not in English, it's in German.

SPEAKER_02

Dark.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Oh my gosh. I had to put this in the book. Oh my gosh, Dark is the best TV show you will ever see in your life if you are fine with subtitles. And I wouldn't watch it dubbed. No, dubbed subtitles? Yeah, dubbed. I wouldn't watch it dubbed. No, watch it with subtitles. Gotta watch it with subtitles because it's so, so good. The actors in it are so good. The storyline is amazing. They, it's one of those shows that you can tell that they ended it on their own terms. They knew exactly what the plot was throughout, it wasn't dragged out in the middle, like lost, something like lost. Yeah. Dark was just so oh full of twists and turns. I can't even describe what it's about. It's basically about a boy who goes missing.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And then everyone is trying to hunt for this boy that goes missing, basically in a cave in the woods, essentially. Yeah. And they're thinking the worst, they're thinking, oh, it's, you know, uh like a predator of some sort. Like and it turns out to be something incredibly supernatural and strange, and there's a lot of like time travel involved, and I don't think that ruins the plot, does it?

SPEAKER_00

It's just there's a lot of like it kind of ruins season one, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, oh yeah, it kind of does, I guess.

SPEAKER_00

He just kind of ruins, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

No, that you know, it comes up, it comes up. It's a very supernatural base show.

SPEAKER_00

Um But you're right about the twists and turns.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, you do not and you need a family tree.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. It's connecting all the dots of who's who, and uh it's it's yeah, it's but what you're right in what you said is that when they wrote it, they knew how they were gonna end it from day one.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

It's not like they were making it up as they go along.

SPEAKER_02

No, they weren't doing it for the money, you know, they weren't just yeah, trudging.

SPEAKER_00

The story is absolutely f- But you're right, because I binged it. It's one of those shows that you can't watch an episode and then what wait a couple of weeks and watch the next episode because you will not know what's happening.

SPEAKER_02

You will either not know what's happening, but you are so invested in the storyline, I feel, yeah, that you you have to binge it because you're like, oh god, no, what what happens next? Yeah, it's really good at capturing you, it's really good at yeah, it's it's the in bringing you in and enticing you in. Oh, it's an amazing show. Please watch it. It's so good. It's so good.

SPEAKER_00

The ending is perfect.

SPEAKER_02

It could not be more perfect, yeah. The ending is completely perfect, it's brilliant, it's a brilliant show. Huge fan, huge fan.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I I had to put dark in. I should have put that one last and finished on dark. It's fine. Started off with Firefly and finished on dark. We've got we've got uh we've got three more. Okay.

Severance And Work Life Morality

SPEAKER_00

I thought I'd mention Severance.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, it's a more modern one, yeah. Um, and it's still going.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. What do you think of Severance? The reason I'm putting said it like that because what do you think of Severance?

SPEAKER_02

I feel like Severance could have a cult following. Um, and I think it certainly does.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

It's very obscure, uh, but it takes something that I think sometimes we flippantly have wished that we have a different uh brain when we go to work and a different brain when we get home, like we could forget everything that happened at work, and and when you're at work, you want to forget everything that's going on at home.

SPEAKER_00

It throws out moral questions.

SPEAKER_02

It does throw a moral question out. Um, full of twists and turns, full of mystery. We still don't actually know what they do for a living. No, which I think is really cool. Um, it's all kind of emotion-based and picking up numbers, very odd. Um, and and the rooms that they work in, the facility that they work in, you just don't know. It feels like one massive social experiment.

SPEAKER_00

I think it is. I think it is gonna be a social experiment.

SPEAKER_02

That I think that's what it is. Yeah, it's just chucking so much weird shit at people. But but yeah, it's it's a great show. Yeah, great show. I don't want to ruin anything by saying anything.

SPEAKER_00

No, no, no.

SPEAKER_02

That one's a tough one to talk about without ruining it.

SPEAKER_00

So the last two are English.

unknown

Ooh.

SPEAKER_00

And a lot of the characters Which means you haven't included my favourite Colton. Or okay, I'll run through these last two and then you do your own. I'll do my last one. So the last two, and that a lot of them have the same the these two shows have the same characters, the same actors in

Darkplace Mighty Boosh And Niche Comedy

SPEAKER_00

them.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, okay.

SPEAKER_00

So I'm gonna put them together.

SPEAKER_03

Go on then.

SPEAKER_00

And that is Garth Merengue's Dark Place.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and the Mighty Boosh.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I thought I'd throw a couple of English ones in there.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. I have seen I haven't seen them in entireties.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

But I have Gareth Morenge, I have seen a couple of episodes.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

It it is very weird.

SPEAKER_00

Very weird.

SPEAKER_02

It's very weird. It's it's very off the beaten track.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Um, as is the Mighty Boosh. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Um they've both got Richard Iowadi in, both got um Nelfielding in.

SPEAKER_02

I loved him in IT crowd as well. IT crowd probably just lumps in, yeah, lumps it all the time. I just felt my job a bit depressing, actually. And uh in the last episode, he's like a mongrel, like he's like a top, like how to get out of your depressive state.

SPEAKER_00

Self-help.

SPEAKER_02

Self-help, yeah, that's it, self-help guru type person. Yeah. Not a lot I can say because I haven't seen them massively, but yeah, I mean, you quote them quite a lot.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, they are definitely, definitely um very niche. And if you get the jokes in it, they're brilliant. But if you don't get it, it's just ridiculous. Matt Berry and Matt Berry's in. Matt Berry's in. All three of them. Yeah. Uh and when you look at because I mean, yeah, Matt Berries on so like what was it?

SPEAKER_02

Is that his real voice? Have I asked you that before?

SPEAKER_00

Do you know why he does that? It is his real voice.

SPEAKER_02

Because it's very like uh authorit like I don't know no, not authoritative. It's very like standard English. Do you know what I mean by that? Like his accent is very English. I don't think we sound as English as he does, does that?

SPEAKER_00

No, he's that he's saying, I know what you mean. It's sort of the Queen's English.

SPEAKER_02

A little bit Queen's English, but in a more casual way. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Casual Queen's English, is that I think you know when he does the ridiculous things with his voice? Yeah. And he goes off, and it's like that's how we speak in Toussaint Arizona.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So the reason he does that.

SPEAKER_02

Very projecting.

SPEAKER_00

He's very pro the reason he does that is because when he said, because when you read a script so many times, he did it as a joke once, because he was saying and then he said he so he just said the line really ridiculously, and someone went, That's hilarious. So that's what they do. So sometimes when they've read the script so many times, he's just so pissed off with the script, he just puts a stupid voice on.

SPEAKER_02

Right.

SPEAKER_00

And it works.

SPEAKER_02

And that was born.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and that was how it was born. Yeah, and that's how it was. It's like when Nadia turns around and says, Um, someone who will remain nameless, and Matt Boto goes, I don't care. His name was Mike.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. He's like, he's very um, I don't know, just very literal. I don't I don't know what the word is, but um, but yeah, I like that.

SPEAKER_00

You can't tempt me with your cheap sex potions.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, he's just he's just so theatrical, but authoritative. I can't I can't quite put my finger on what it's like.

SPEAKER_00

When he walks through the park, they say, Good evening. Oh, go back to your own country.

SPEAKER_01

What the f that's another pound in the swear jar. Yeah. Nah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Um, so yeah, Mighty Boosh and uh Garth Mango's Dark Place were my last two.

SPEAKER_02

Very nice.

SPEAKER_00

You've got one?

SPEAKER_02

Well,

Gilmore Girls New Girl And Comfort Cults

SPEAKER_02

I can't believe you didn't put Gilmore Girls on there. There's a massive cult following. Thank you. Gilmore Girls is the best show in the world. Um, I would even lump it with New Girl because I'm getting really into that's getting a bit of a cult following.

SPEAKER_00

What New Girl? Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

What's his name? Um he's Nick Miller in in uh in New Girl, but his name is Jake Johnson. Right. And uh the guy that plays um Winston, aka Winnie the Bish, aka Frown Lightning, aka aka aka Prank Sinatra. Yeah, what a great character, what a great show. Um I think that's another show, like Gilmore Girls, it's got a cult cult following because it's so sweet and it's got that autumn feel, and I think it's one one for the girls, that one, I have to say, like that's one for girls.

SPEAKER_00

Whereas I quite liked it, I got into it.

SPEAKER_02

Uh it's funny, it's got kind of very kind of almost British humour for an American show.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Um, it's very dry, very sarcastic, very quick witted, I think. And I think that's why it works really well. And I think it just it's just for the book girlies that one. It's the small town vibe, it's everything that's going on there. Yeah. Whereas what was I just talking about in the minute? Gilmore Girls. Uh no, not Gilmore Girls. New girl. When New Girl is essentially friends in the modern day. Yeah. That's what New Girl is. Yeah. It's loads of people living in one apartment in a loft. Right. In I don't know, I don't think they're in New York. Because Friends are set in New York.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I can't remember where they're where they're set now. Oh, so it's Seattle, maybe? I can't I can't remember where um where New Girl's set.

SPEAKER_00

But um she's um Jessica Jones, isn't she? Oh no, I'm thinking don't mess the with the bitch in apartment B. Um No, she's um is Zoe de Chanel, isn't it?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, Zoe de Chanel, Emily De Chanel's sister.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Who does make an appearance?

SPEAKER_00

Does she? Yeah. As Bones.

SPEAKER_02

No, not as Bones. Bones, that's another cult following, really. Um, another David Borianist job.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Love that show, that was great. I've I've watched that all the way through recently as well. Um but yeah. What they did to Sweets was I I don't think I've ever recovered. The fact that you've just mentioned that has just sent chills down my body again.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I can't believe they did that.

SPEAKER_00

Do you know who he is, don't you? The actor who plays Sweets. You know what he wrote?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I do.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And that's why he got written out of it because he was too busy.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And I can't believe it.

SPEAKER_00

But the way they wrote him out was just horrendous.

SPEAKER_02

I I don't I actually I'm tearing up now. I don't think I've ever recovered from that. There's still trauma after that death. Awful. Uh, but back to Newgirl. Um, very light and funny. Jess is one of those characters that's quite cringy to watch. She she's quite out there. She's quite weird. And again, that's why I think it falls into the cult TV following because it's another slightly strange one. Um, best ever first on-screen kiss in New Girl, hands down. Yeah. Yeah. When when um Nick and Jess finally kiss for the first time, it's like, oh my god, like it's it's the best, it's the best TV. Uh Winston Bishop, I can't remember the bloke who plays him, but gosh, is he funny? Um, Schmidt's funny, Cece's funny. They're all they've all got their own little clicks and their own little things, and um uh classic CeCe Winston mess around, and like they've just there's so many inside jokes that again are throughout the whole show that they come back to. Megan Fox makes an appearance in it, Prince makes an appearance in it. The Prince episode is brilliant. When they first meet Prince for the first time, and then Prince goes, Oh, sorry, I haven't given you a moment to freak out, and and then Jess is like, Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, and Nick is just standing there just still, and then he goes suddenly goes, it's brilliant, it's like it's such a good meme. Oh, you need to watch it.

SPEAKER_00

Please watch it.

SPEAKER_02

The first season, it gets better. It's a bit like Parks and Wreck. You have to get over the first season.

SPEAKER_00

Parks and Wreck.

SPEAKER_02

Parks and Wreck, another one.

SPEAKER_00

Parks and Wreck. Great Parks and Wreck.

SPEAKER_02

Leslie, nope.

SPEAKER_00

And there's one series I can't believe I didn't list. Mentioned it as

Supernatural Lore And Rewatch Plans

SPEAKER_00

Well, probably when one that I have seen I don't know how many times and you have as well.

SPEAKER_02

What's that?

SPEAKER_00

Supernatural.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yeah. Well, that goes without saying. Supernatural has probably one of the biggest cult followings. Yeah, I didn't even mention it in my list. It's either it's it's either such a big cult following that's not classed as a cult anymore. It's it's so massive. Again, Supernatural is one of those shows that just brings back those little nuggets that you thought you forgot in the first thing. Yeah there's always some sort of in-joke about the Impala, the Impala getting wrecked, the Impala not being driven by Dean, the the Impala um needing work and having stuff done. You've got uh Bobby Singer, who is uh essentially an Irish kind of like got that kind of Irish humour humour to him, sarcastic, yeah, calling them idiots. He took on the role of their father.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Because they wrote him off because he was busy doing his other things.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I I always think really strangely of that character because in Supernatural he was kind of the deadbeat dad, shall we say? Like he was the deadbeat dad. And then he played Negan in The Walking Dead, and he was a nasty bugger in that.

SPEAKER_00

Well, even there's one point where um Dean picks up the bat like Lucille from The Walking Dead, and it's got the in Supernatural, and he's got the he's got the um the barbed wire wrapped around it, and he looks at it and goes, Dad I'd love this.

SPEAKER_02

And that that is little things like that, like the little almost almost fourth wall breaking a little bit. Yeah. But it almost is like referencing that they've been in other things together or constantly.

SPEAKER_00

Constant they mention Gilmore girls.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. When they go on the set and they gun the set is like, if you're lucky, you might be able to see one of the people in Gilmore Girls, and then Bjara Fenlecki just sitting there like that. Because coincidentally, or funnily enough, he played Dean in Gilmore Girls, and now he plays Sam Dean's brother in Supernatural. I'm gonna re-watch Supernatural. I'm gonna do it.

SPEAKER_00

It is so good.

SPEAKER_02

I'm gonna make Mitchell sit through it sometime.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Oh Mitchell never seen it.

SPEAKER_02

It's just not his thing. He's not really into that kind of that spooky side of stuff.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, what's your favourite episode?

SPEAKER_02

Gotta be yellow fever.

SPEAKER_00

I was gonna say, let's say it on.

SPEAKER_02

That was scary. I think that's season two. Yeah. I've got to get through season one first. Yeah. I might actually just start from season two. Because season one's just the build-up, isn't it? Of you don't really get a lot of lore.

SPEAKER_00

No, you don't get a lot of lore. I think I might start from season two and then pudding.

SPEAKER_02

Pudding. God, it's so funny. Maybe I'll watch a season one recap and then I'll watch season two.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, you don't need to watch all of season one.

SPEAKER_02

I don't think so.

SPEAKER_00

I think because season one is very much the individual episodes. Yes, it is, exactly. Yeah, exactly. Which I think the lore.

SPEAKER_02

Bloody Mary is in that. Yeah. The lore comes in later. Yeah. Okay, I'll start from season two. Are we done? We're done. We're done. Okay.
